  NORTHERN ACADEMY OF VOCAL EXCELLENCE
Public Overview 3
 INTRODUCTION
Barnsley Youth Choir now needs a bespoke centre to realise its ambitious plans to develop Barnsley as a centre for singing excellence.
This rehearsal and development venue will have a dramatic impact on the quality of provision we are able to offer. It will provide opportunities to expand, grow and work in a much more dynamic way, fostering meaningful and pertinent relationships with outstanding practitioners and organisations, both nationally and internationally. Specialist spaces and facilities with full access to high quality equipment will enable the organisation to work in a much more professional way, which will significantly impact on outcomes.
During the last 4 years the choir and its leaders have carefully considered the opportunities and risks of owning and running a venue.
BYC is now convinced that it has the capacity, vision and drive to make this a success. Early pre-design engagement with choir members, volunteers and other key stakeholders has already taken place, and ongoing community engagement will be vital in shaping the project.
Through the support of Barnsley MBC, a viable building has been identified which, with refurbishment, will provide a world class facility and meet the aims and functions identified through consultation.
AIMS AND FUNCTIONS
• To provide exceptional development opportunities to young people in our town and beyond through the training of young people and leaders who work with
young people.
• To provide training to all ages of the community in music.
• To provide a space for community groups and to generate income through hire of the facility to ensure that the building is viable and sustainable.
OUTCOMES
• To develop a centre for young people, children and volunteers which supports children and young people to develop their musicianship, collaborative skills, confidence and sense of identity
• To create a fit-for-purpose space which enables the choir to pursue excellence in all of its activities
• To develop a locally-facing, accessible inclusive space for all which is rooted in Barnsley, yet with strong connections across the North of England, nationally and internationally with strong connections both in person and digitally
• To ensure the centre has a number of income generating opportunities which support its operation, running costs and sustainability
• To refurbish a current building into a low carbon building which is energy-efficient, has low energy costs and contributes to combating climate change
