BARRETT Conductor of TUKS Camerata South Africa
Dr Michael Barrett is the Director of Choral Activities at the University of Pretoria (UP), the conductor of the Tuks Camerata and a Senior Lecturer in choral conducting in the department of music. He was a member of the Drakensberg Boys’ Choir from 1992 to 1997. He obtained the degrees BMus in Performing Arts (cum laude) in 2005 and MMus (Performing Arts), specialising
in choral conducting from UP. He holds a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) from UNISA and a Performance Licentiate in Singing (2008). In 2017, Michael completed his doctorate in Choral Performance at the University of Pretoria.
Michael’s choirs have won numerous national
and international awards and have participated in competitions globally. Some of these include the Grand Prix of Nations (Latvia 2017), the 8th World Choir Games (Latvia 2014); St Petersburg Choral Competition (Russia 2013); Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod (Wales 2012); Krakow International Advent Choral Competition (Poland 2012); Europe and its Songs (Spain 2010); and the International Youth Music Festival (Slovakia 2010).
In 2017, The University of Pretoria Camerata was invited to Barcelona (Spain) to perform at the 11th World Symposium of Choral Music, hosted by the International Federation on Choral Music.
The Camerata has also been nominated for two South African Music Awards and released three albums under his direction.
Michael is also an active composer and arranger. His music is internationally published by Santa Barbara Music Publishers as well as Walton Music. He is regularly invited to give workshops and adjudicate choral competitions both nationally and internationally. He regularly attends symposia and conferences all over the world to remain at the forefront of choral music education. Michael holds a number of important positions within international choral organisations including sitting on the Advisory Board of the World Choir Council, a founding member and board member for the International Choral Conductors Federation and a member of the Choralspace Academy.
In 2017 Michael led inspiring workshops and rehearsals with BYC at the European Choir Games in Riga, Latvia and in 2018 Michael visited Barnsley and worked with the wider organisation. He
had a profound impact on all 6 choirs as he led rehearsals, workshops and concerts. He has since provided significant artistic support for the choir, including online work throughout the pandemic.
