Tygerberg Children’s Choir is from Cape Town, an area that we have not visited or had choirs visit Barnsley from. Whilst we would have dearly loved to visit Cape Town in 2019 the costs were prohibitive as it involved an internal flight from Johannesburg. Since 2018 there have been a number of changes within the organisation, including the brilliant Karina Erasmus taking over as conductor. They have committed to taking part in the Hull International Competition and were keen to visit Barnsley as part of this mini tour. Clearly, we are incredibly happy to welcome them to our town. During their visit they will have a workshop with our Children’s Choirs and another with our Intermediate and Senior Choirs. They will work in a Primary School, and also have a Civic Reception at the Town Hall to welcome them properly to our town, with opportunities to look around the town centre and see the fabulous work that has taken place.
They will visit Experience Barnsley and also visit York where they will go to the wonderful Van Gogh Immersive Experience, perform at York Minster and also have time to see key sights such as The Shambles and the Castle. The visit will also include 2 concerts in Barnsley on Tuesday evening (featuring Tygerberg on their own),
and Wednesday evening (featuring Tygerberg and BYC Senior and Intermediate Choirs)
Throughout this trip we will do all that we can to make them feel welcome and feel the warmth of our special community. I am particularly grateful to the team that has worked tirelessly behind the scenes to make arrangements. Firstly, to Debbie Hobson and Nicola Ellel who have organised host families and will support them through the visit. Secondly to Jo McDonald and David Carr who will be cooking 4 meals for the choir to ensure that they are really well fed. Karen Davis has organised itineraries and lots of detail that sits behind the whole visit, overseeing all aspects of the visit with fine precision and a real eye for detail. Thanks also go, yet again, to the brilliant Lynne Veal who organises tickets and front of house – it would be easy to take her superb work for granted, but we certainly never do. The wider volunteer team, affectionally known as the Red Shirt Brigade, will again be on hand to make all of this possible with their usual positive and solution focused attitude.
Finally, thanks must go to those who have been kind enough to host Tygerberg Children’s Choir children. Without their support this would not be possible, and we really appreciate them hosting these children in their homes and taking care of them.
Thank you to singers, families and audience members for extending the special warmth enjoyed by groups that visit Barnsley.
