It’s been quite the term for the ‘Beasts of the East’. New enthusiastic singers keep appearing and we have had 19 members at rehearsals over the last few weeks - a post pandemic record!
We are now setting our sights on getting 25
to rehearsal and it won’t be long before we
do. Charlie Brammer, BYC’s new trustee with
a specific responsibility for the NAVE building development, is keen to help our small choir grow and it’s been exciting to discuss and plan with both him and Lee.
The extra numbers mean that we are now able to hold clear harmonies and pick up more complex music. There are strong, keen young singers coming through and they are making noticeable improvements each week. The arrival of Leah Saxton and Livi Bloomer as Assistant MDs have made a significant impact on our choir. Both of them bring real musical expertise with experience in studying at the Leeds Conservatoire, but also bring a really positive energy to the group. They have got stuck in straight away and have lots to offer to our members.
I’m really grateful for the support of Helen Madden, who offers wonderful support as our accompanist, and to mentors Lily-Mae Batley and Ellie Jenkinson for their support of the choir. Finally, sincere thanks must go to the brilliant volunteer team led by Lee Jenkinson that work so hard to provide this opportunity to young people in this area.
The Beasts of the East remain committed and it was great to see a large percentage of them take part in the Tygerberg workshop, Gala Dinner and of course the recent Singathon.
I can’t wait for them to experience the quality of the Aurin Choir this weekend!
