TYGERBERG
CHILDRENS CHOIR VISIT CAPE TOWN, SOUTH AFRICA
We were thrilled to welcome the Tygerberg Children’s Choir to Barnsley for rehearsals, workshops and concerts. Tygerberg have an outstanding international pedigree, being the highest ranked children’s choir in the world. In the 2018 World Choir Games they were crowned double World Champions, winning the Children’s Choir and Sacred A Cappella categories against adult choirs from across the world. They are ranked 4 th in the overall Interkultur World Rankings against many thousand adults choirs – a phenomenal achievement.
It was a fabulous opportunity for our young people to work with such gifted and skilled children from a different culture. During their stay in Barnsley they took part in workshops with our Children’s Choirs, performed a concert on their own on Tuesday 25 th April, and then performed with the BYC Senior and Intermediate Choirs on Wednesday 26 th April to sell-out audiences. They also delivered a workshop at Worsborough Common Primary School, were given a full Civic Reception by the Mayor of Barnsley and also visited York for the day, which included a performance in the awe- inspiring York Minster.
Thank you to those who were kind enough to host our special guests in their homes, and to Karen, Debbie and Nicola who worked so hard to ensure that the visit ran smoothly. Finally great thanks go to Jo McDonald for cooking wonderful food for them all; so much so that it was listed as a real highlight of their entire England tour!
We are so grateful to Karina Erasmus and her team for bringing this phenomenal choir to Barnsley, and hope to travel to Cape Town in the near future and take up their invitation to visit them in South Africa.
