      APRIL 28TH – MAY 1ST 2023
HULL INTERNATIONAL CHOIR COMPETITION
We were thrilled to take part in the first ever Interkultur event to be held in Great Britain. Interkultur are the organising body of the World Choir Games and European Choir Games and are seen as a gold standard in organising international events throughout the world.
BYC Artistic Director, Mat Wright took a leading role in the event as co-Artistic Director, working alongside Interkultur Senior Artistic Director, Johan Rooze from South Korea. The competition attracted a lot of interest from choirs from across the world and choirs from Croatia, Finland, Greece, Turkey, Lithuania, South Africa, Sweden and, of course, Great Britain took part in an event that involved over 1000 singers.
Whilst it wouldn’t have been fair for BYC to compete in this competition, given Mat’s
role as an Artistic Director, the BYC Senior
Choir performed in a special Gala Concert on Saturday 29 th April at Jubilee Central Concert Hall alongside 3 other outstanding choirs from Finland, South Africa and Cornwall. The standard of singing was incredibly high and it was such a joyous event that the full-to-capacity
audience appreciated.
The end of the concert involved a fabulous joint piece with over 200 singers singing ‘Spirit’ arranged and conducted by Mat with the
BYC band.
On Sunday 30th April the BYC Intermediate and Senior Choirs travelled over again to Hull and led a workshop with all of the other choirs involved in the competition in Hull City Hall. It was a glorious sight seeing over 1000 singers working together and they learnt 2 pieces; Al Shlosha and Africa in two joyous hours. Both of our choirs then stayed for the closing awards ceremony where they performed the pieces with all the singers in a magnificent finale to the competition.
