Barnsley Singers
Barnsley Singers held its first rehearsal on Tuesday 18th October at Horizon CC. It was such an exciting night and certainly surpassed all
of our expectations. The choir was established after so many requests over the years from adults who were keen to experience the buzz that our young people feel when they
sing together.
The timing of this choir being formed was important. It was vital that I didn’t start something that would in any way undermine the work that was going on with Barnsley Youth Choir. We needed a leader; someone with the capacity and skill to lead
a team of adults with a wide range P4
of abilities. After discussions with Luke Mather he agreed to take on the role of Musical Director. Luke
is a highly skilled conductor with a growing reputation. As a singer in the National Youth Choir of Great Britain he has worked with world famous conductors in venues across the world. He has also gained experience directing a number of choirs of different standards and is ready
to take on this exciting project. I’m absolutely thrilled that he agreed to do it and know that people will really take to him.
Our next job was to recruit an accompanist. There were a number of people who got in touch with
us about the position and we were thrilled with the calibre. Robert Cooper joins us with a real pedigree. He is a very talented musician and able to lead rehearsals on his own following a number of musical director roles in a variety of projects. Luke and Robert have worked together previously and will forge a great partnership. Both are young, eager, highly talented and humble. The choir has already taken to them and clearly enjoys working with them.

I revealed that the newly formed Barnsley Singers would take part in a concert only a matter of weeks after being formed. The announcement
