Steven
Roberts Guest Conductor, Great Britain
Steven Roberts is Musical Director and Conductor of Altrincham Choral Society, Chesterfield Philharmonic Choir and Honley Male Voice Choir. Steven was appointed an honorary Life Member of both ACS and CPC in recognition of his contribution to their development and success.
Holding this post for three different and geographically located choirs reflects the passion, energy, stamina and enthusiasm Steven has for music and the joy it brings to everyone involved: performers and audiences alike. Whilst Steven is rightly in demand as a choral and voice specialist, he is also able to draw upon his extensive knowledge and experience from studies of other musical genres, notably piano and brass.
Steven embarked on his successful career almost 30
years ago whilst at Barnsley College where he worked until 2006, combining his musical activities with key full- time roles including: Head of Performing Arts and Music, Head of Quality and Director of External Relations. He
has conducted a variety of choirs, bands and ensembles including the Dodworth and Skelmanthorpe Male Voice Choirs, the Allendale Chamber Orchestra, the Liverpool Welsh Choral Union, Sing Live UK, Unlimited Voices, Huddersfield Choral Society, the Manchester Philharmonia and Derbyshire Sinfonia alongside numerous choirs, bands, orchestras and ensembles.
Steven was chorus master for the rock classic concerts: ‘The Magic of Queen’ (Halle Orchestra) and the Electric Light Orchestra (Royal Philharmonic Orchestra). He was also Musical Director for the award winning Gary Clarke Company’s production of ‘COAL’, a contemporary dance production based on the miners’ strike of 1984/85. The production featured live brass with players drawn from some of the country’s most famous championship section brass bands.
Carlton Main Frickley Colliery Band played for the preview in 2016 and on numerous occasions during the tour.
In recognition of this successful collaboration he was made honorary vice president of the band in December 2018.
In 2019, he returns as Musical Director of the Gary Clarke Company for the highly anticipated sequel ‘WASTELAND’ – this will also be touring the country during 2019/2020.
He has conducted in many prestigious concert halls in the UK, including the Royal Albert Hall, London. He has also been privileged to conduct in many sacred settings including St Paul’s Cathedral, London and St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome. He has conducted throughout Italy and also in France, Spain and Germany.
Steven has led choral days and workshops every year since 1993 and aims to continue to inspire singers throughout the country for many years to come. He is Chairman of
The British and International Federation of Festivals and regularly adjudicates throughout the United Kingdom.
His success and contribution to music in this country was recognised in 2013 when he was made a Life Member of the Royal Philharmonic Society.
Outside of work, Steven is very proud to be a member of The Lords Taverners – the cricketing charity that raises money to give ‘young people, particularly with special needs, a sporting chance’. He is also very proud to be a patron of ‘EnRich’, the Barnsley based charity set up in memory of Richard Tolson, to support creative opportunities for young people.
